Walter Scholes

Walter Scholes, 97, of Stanton, ND passed away Tuesday, July 27, 2021, at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. CDT on Monday, September 20, 2021 at the North Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery, Mandan, ND with Pastor Dennis Ristvedt officiating.

Walter was born on June 16, 1924 in Carson, ND to Dean and Rowene (Hotham) Scholes. He grew up and attended country school near Carson and also attended school at Carson School. Walter joined the U.S. Navy following school and served his country from 1945 to 1946. When Walter returned from his time in the service, he worked various construction jobs, from building roads to working on the Garrison Dam. He married Barbara Raugget in Mobridge, SD on September 20, 1958. The couple moved to Stanton in the 1960s when the power plants were being built. Walter was one of the first employees of Basin Electric at Leland Olds Station and retired in 1988.

Walter and Barbara loved to travel. They especially enjoyed taking their children, Todd and Tricia on trips with their camper. Walter also took many motorcycle trips with Todd, making it to 48 states. He loved to visit and spend time with his brother, Bill. Walter also enjoyed tending to his yard and keeping up his home, as well as going boating and attending thrashing shows.

Walter is survived by his children, Todd (Cassie) Scholes of Center and Tricia (Gary) Leinius of Stanton; one granddaughter, Lindsey Buchmann of Mandan; four siblings; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; his parents; his granddaughter, Brittney Buchmann; and eight siblings.

Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
