Sally Werre

Sally Werre

Our beloved Mother, Sally Lois (Smith) Werre, passed from this life Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at the age of 73 at Mile Bluff Medical Center is Mauston, WI.

Funeral services were held Saturday, January 13 at 10:00 a.m. at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elgin with Pastor Mike HarriSon officiating.

Sally was born to Evelyn and Juniss (June) Smith at the Owensboro Daviss County Hospital in Kentucky on November 5, 1950, and grew up in the Newman and Owensboro area.

She met the love of her life, Leonard “Babe” Werre in 1996. The first time he paid her a visit, Babe was such a gentleman, he brought lilacs to her (that he picked from someone else’s yard). After dating for a time, in 1998 Babe pointed to the calendar and informed (didn’t ask) Sally that they were getting married, which they did on December 18, 1998 at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elgin. You rarely saw one of them without the other; they were each other’s best friend in the world.

A few years after Babe’s passing, Sally moved to Mandan, ND where she spent most of her time shopping at Walmart, never missing bingo, and attending church services where she found friends, love, and acceptance.

In the past, Sally was an avid book reader, loved painting and mak-ing needle work gifts for family and friends. Her favorite artist was Thomas Kincad. Sally also spent her time volunteering at various functions, helping her friends and neighbors, offering kindness to all she encountered. But most of all, she treasured her time with her family.

When she was in her early teens, she was a volunteer candy striper at a hospital. And when she had her eldest daughter (Rachelle), she had her first paying job as a CNA to support them both.

Sally majored in English when she went to college and that led her to becoming not only a typesetter and graphic artist, but also the owner of a small business in her early 20s. Over the years Sally had various jobs as the only typesetter and graphic artist at printing companies both in California and Utah, and then retiring from the Grant County News in Elgin, ND as a typesetter and reporter.

In October of 2023, Sally moved to Charlestown, IN to live with family.

Preceeding her in death were her parents, husband, Babe, three brothers, one sister, and one grandson, Antonio.

Sally is survived by two daughters, Rachelle Vigil of Minneapolis, MN, and Cecilya Gibbs of Charlestown, IN. And the twinkle of her eyes were her five grandchildren, Salina, Alex, Isaac, Danielle and Keith; her four great-grandchildren, Maleah, Journee, Syalas, and Ocean; granddaughter-in-law, Quincy and her nieces, nephews, several cousins, and many friends she adored.

Momma was and is deeply loved and will be sorely missed by all, especially her family. But, we take comfort in knowing she is finally with the Lord in peace and happiness.
