Luella Hochhalter

Luella Hochhalter, age 98 of Elgin, went to be with her Lord August 7, 2022. The Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. MT on Friday, August 12, 2022, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elgin with Pastor Bethany Haberstroh, officiating. Cremation will take place and inurnment will be in the Bethesda United Methodist Cemetery at Elgin.

Special music will be provided by Todd Allen, organist and Marcy Haase, soloist.

Serving as casketbearers are her grandchildren, Kip Matteson, Sherry Greenrich, April Ganser, Jason Palm, Erin Martin, Courtney Hochhalter, Chad Ottmar, Lance Ottmar, Lynly Hebert, Austin Hochhalter, and Mackenzie Hochhalter. All of Luella’s great and great great grandchildren are considered Honorary Bearers.

Luella Hochhalter was born on July 28, 1924, at New Leipzig, ND to Ferdinand and Johanna (Leidtke) Hochhalter. She was educated in rural schools and graduated from New Leipzig High School in 1942. She attended Beauty School and worked in Stanley, ND for a short time. During WWII she moved to Los Angeles, CA and worked as a riveter before marrying Elmer Hochhalter on April 28, 1945. They began their life together on a farm south of Elgin. Five children were born to this union, Sandra, Beverly, Randy, Linda, and Barry.

Upon retirement from the farm, she worked at the Jacobson Memorial Hospital in Dietery for 25 years. Luella was active in the Elgin Lioness Club and the Bits & Pieces Quilt Club for many years. Many days were spent baking birthday and wedding cakes, which she very much enjoyed.

Her husband Elmer Hochhalter went to his reward on July 24, 1986. Luella loved to travel and work in her garden. Spending time with her family was her highest joy when they came to visit.

Surviving family members include her five children, Sandra Matteson, Elgin, ND; Beverly (Grant) Palm, Bozeman, MT; Randy (Shirley Dworshak) New Leipzig, ND; Linda (Blaine) Ottmar, Elgin, ND; Barry (Lisa Watson) Hochhalter, Sioux Falls, SD; 11 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; her sister, Lillian Fuchs, Carson, ND; brother, Otto Hochhalter, Dickinson, ND; sister-inlaw, Alice (Doug) Zeller, and brother-in-law, Edgar Hintz; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer; son-in-law, Douglas Matteson, great grandchildren, Andrew Matteson, Blaze Ganser, and Skylar Palm, and great great grandchild, Elijah Forsberg; brothers, Herbert, Alvin, Ted Hochhalter, Harlan Rieger; sisters, Tina Hintz, Emma Hintz, Lydia Enzi, Elsie Eisenbarth, Elsie Rieger, Betty Keller, Ruth Iblings, Neyla Laub, Rose Meuchels, and Carol Hintz.

Memorials may be sent to Bethesa United Methodist Church in Elgin or the Jacobson Memorial Hospital Care Center.

Visitation will be on Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Elgin.
