Larry Schafer

Larry G. Schafer, age 81, of New Leipzig, ND, passed away peacefully on Thursday evening, December 14, 2023 at the Jacobson Memorial Hospital in Elgin, ND, with his wife Shirley by his side.

Funeral services for Larry were held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 22, 2023, at the Hope Congregational Church in Elgin, ND. Pastor Ed Zimmerman officiated with burial in the Zoar United Methodist Cemetery southwest of New Leipzig, ND.

Visitation was held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday evening, December 21, 2023, at the Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Elgin.

Larry George Schafer was born on December 1, 1942, at Kirksville, MO, to George and Lenora (Magstadt) Schafer. He joined his sisters Loretta Carlson of Bismarck, ND, and Gloria Roth of New Leipzig, ND.

Larry grew up on the family farm eventually taking over after his father passed away.

He attended country school at the Eagle School and the Solie School, graduating from New Leipzig High School in 1960.

He also served in the National Guard from 1964 to 1970, after which he was honorably discharged.

He was married to Shirley Rennich of Lemmon, SD, on November 27, 1976, at Bethesda United Methodist Church of Elgin, ND. Together they worked side by side taking care of the farming and livestock. They enjoyed trips to Medora and the Black Hills enjoying beautiful scenery.

Larry and Shirley loved country and gospel music and dancing, especially waltzes.

Larry is survived by his wife of 47 years, Shirley; sisters, Loretta Carlson, Bismarck, ND and Gloria Roth, New Leipzig, ND; brother-in-law, Wesley Rennich, Huron, SD; nieces, Amy (Nathan) Schmidt, Great Falls, MT, Londa (Mike) Holen, Bismarck, ND, Tammy (Winton) Boyd, Minneapolis, MN; nephews, Trent (Michelle) Roth, St. Michael, MN, Troy (Jodi) Roth, Bismarck, ND and Scott (Debbie) Carlson, Sun Prairie, WI.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws Henry and Freda Rennich; and brothers-in-law, Douglas Carlson and Brian Roth.

A memorial has been established.
