Burial followed at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Elgin. Visitation was one hour prior to the Funeral at the church on Thursday morning.

Janice was born July 16, 1937 to John and Mattie (Faut) Kramer in Heil N.D. She was raised on a farm in Heil with her siblings, Melvin Kramer (2016), Stella Ternes (2014), and Delmar Kramer (2003). Infant twin brothers also preceded Janice.

She graduated from Elgin High School and Dickinson State College, majoring in Education. She began her teaching career in the local area and 30 years later retired, most of those years were spent teaching first grade at Carson Elementary, Carson, N.D. She often spoke affectionately of her students and enjoyed keeping up with them as adults.

She was married to Curtis Kauffmann (2013) of Leith, N.D. for over 20 years before she moved to Elgin, N.D. Although Janice did not have children of her own, she spent many holidays, visits, and celebrations with her sister Stella’s family (husband Larry Ternes). Stella and Larry’s children (9 girls and 3 boys) remember her sense of humor, her kindness, her profound love of family, as well as her many hobbies and interests. Living many years of her life on a farm, she loved animals and spoke of her beloved dog, Penny. Janice enjoyed the outdoors by gardening, fishing, snowmobiling, and playing golf. She golfed at the Elgin golf course for many years, most times walking the course. Janice was an avid reader, crocheter, knitter, and ceramics painter. Janice and Stella shared a deep sisterly bond, they spent a lot of time together in retirement, learning new hobbies, traveling, talking over dinner, and shopping. They took a lace making class that resulted in some intricate and beautiful lace projects. Janice was an accomplished seamstress, embroiderer, and quilter. She had stacks of quilts that she had pieced together, and hand quilted over the years, as well as helping on numerous family wedding quilts. Janice also had a great love for her community and church. She was a long-time member of the Elgin quilt club, she attended craft club for many years, was an active member of her church, and helped raise funds for the Historical Society. She spoke fondly of her many friends in her community, recounting the lovely dinners they spent together. Janice will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Children’s Programs at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Elgin, N.D. the church Janice attended for most of her adult life.
