The Mandan community mourns after a fatal two-vehicle crash in Bismarck killed one Mandan student and injured two others.
The fatal crash took place around 8:35 p.m. on Friday, October 2 at the intersection of West Main Ave and Missouri Ave in Bismarck. According to preliminary reports, Cameron Schestler of Bismarck was traveling westbound on Main Ave at a high rate of speed while allegedly racing another vehicle. Schertler’s vehicle struck a Chevrolet Equinox as it was turning left onto Missouri Ave. The driver of the Equinox, a 15-year-old Mandan boy, is expected to recover. The passengers included a 17-year-old Mandan boy who was ejected and remains hospitalized in serious condition and a 16-year-old Mandan girl who died from injuries she sustained in the crash. She was identified as Taylor Fisher, a junior at Mandan High.
The crash remains under investigation by the Bismarck Police Department.
Members of the Mandan community gathered at Mandan High School Sunday night for a candlelight vigil following the Oct. 2 crash in Bismarck.
The vigil began with prayer and scripture before students, school staff and community members shared memories, stories, laughter and tears. Hundreds of candles illuminated the gathering as those in attendance embraced and supported one another through an emotional evening.
Health professionals and law enforcement were also present to provide support to those grieving.
