With “heavy hearts and profound sadness,” the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation recently shared the passing of Medora legend Bill Sorensen over the weekend at 76. Sorensen died Saturday morning, Oct. 31, 2026, reportedly of heart failure.
“For five decades, Bill was the beating heart of Medora’s entertainment. Performing in more than 1,000 shows, including the Medora Musical, he left an indelible mark on millions of showgoers who were lifted by his warmth, quick wit, and mischievous magic,” the foundation said in a press release. “For each of the last 10 years, he inspired us with his impactful message at the Medora Gospel Brunch. Few individuals in North Dakota history have shared their gifts so generously or shaped a community’s identity so completely.”
Funeral services and visitation for Mr. Sorensen will be hosted at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Bismarck, located at 106 Osage Ave., on Sunday, Nov. 8, from 3-5 p.m. CST.
“I think the word legend is thrown around a little bit too loosely sometimes, but if there’s ever one appropriate to the meaning of it, it’s definitely Bill,” said TRMF Marketing Director Brock White. “I mean, he had an outsized impact is the best way I’ve heard it put over the past couple of days over here.”
The release added, “We extend our deepest condolences to Bill’s daughters, his grandchildren, his love, Cathy, his family, his loved ones, and the generations of guests and friends who were fortunate enough to share in his joy.
“Though the curtain has fallen on a storied life, Bill’s presence remains permanently woven into the fabric of Medora. His spirit endures on the Sorensen Stage at the Old Town Hall Theater, throughout the festive tradition of his ‘A Magical Medora Christmas’ tour, and in the cherished stories told by all who saw him perform.
“Thank you, Bill, for your commitment to our mission, your endless passion for the Badlands, and the light you brought to every stage. Medora is forever changed because of you, and we remain eternally grateful,” the release said in closing.
A prayer service for Mr. Sorensen will be hosted at the same location beginning at 5 p.m. CST, while his memorial service will also be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on Monday, Nov. 9, beginning at 10:30 a.m. CST.
Known by many as “Mr. Medora,” Sorensen was born on March 2, 1950. During his career, he performed more than 1,000 shows at the Medora Musical over the last 50 years, while appearing as a co-host from 2013-15 and during later seasons. He also served as mayor of Bismarck from 1990-2002, was a North Dakota state representative from 1987-1990, and served on the Bismarck City Council for a total of 24 years.
“He was performing until the end of this season, and then this season was kind of his unofficial last season, but he was working at the Gospel Brunch delivering his signature message that was part of the show,” White said. “And on the last day of the Gospel Brunch – that was Labor Day weekend or the weekend after there – he announced that he was officially stepping down from the stage, and we did a little retirement thing for him at the show, and that was it.
“But every year he was involved in some form or another; for 10 years it was the Gospel Brunch and the musical before that, and other magic shows and things over the years, and he’s done it all out here, he was part of all of it.”
