David Roll was born to Joe and Pauline Roll on September 12, 1970. He was the second youngest of their 21 children. When he was just a toddler he would spend hours rocking in his little rocking chair. As a youngster, David was a very inquisitive child. He always wanted to know why. Every explanation seemed to end with another question, why? His inquisitive mind and time spent working with his father in the family’s repair shop, helped develop his talents as a mechanic.

David attended Elgin Public School. After his schooling, David and his dear friend Kathy Theurer moved to Colorado. There he worked with his brothers in their auto repair shop and worked part time at local restaurants where he gained his love for cooking.

After a couple of years David and Kathy returned to North Dakota and settled on the family’s farm. He worked many jobs throughout his life. He worked for KZ Welding and Auto Repair for many years. David had many talents and was a great helping hand with many projects. He was known for helping anyone in need of help and often went out of his way to do so. He was a good man with a heart of gold.

David was considered a free spirit in many ways and at times a bit too free spirited. It was often said that his favorite suit was his birthday suit.

David loved spending time down by the river playing with his dog and just enjoying the beauty of nature.

David had a great love for animals and had many pets throughout the years. One of the most unusual was a pet whitetail deer that would follow them everywhere. He seemed to have a special connection with animals, especially his dog, Porkchop. Porkchop was the love of his life the past couple of years. They were true companions.

David is survived by his mother, Pauline; sisters, Claudia Ostermiller, Theresa Mertz, Loretta (Jim) Schumacher, Shirley (Ray) Schutt, Linda Johnson, Evangeline (Joe) Tebeau, Della Ficek, Janice Hansen, Beverly Winkler, Dori Klopfer, and Madonna Walden; brothers, Joseph (Norma), Maynard (Donna), Nicky (Lorna) Roger, Bradley and Duane (Karen); and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joe; brother, Mark; sisters, Hildegard and Maevonne; and his grandparents.

Burial of the ashes and a celebration of his life will be held in the early Summer of 2021.

Memorials can be sent to Pauline Roll, 402 7th St. NE, Mandan, ND, 58554.
