PASTOR’S NOTES

It has been several months since we have looked together at the book of Colossians, so I’d like to remind us that one reason why the apostle Paul was writing to the Colossians was to counter some false teaching that had crept into the church, leading the believers away from the truth of God’s Word. We can see this in the verse where we resume today. Colossians 2:19: “Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind.” The verb “cheat” means “to deprive” or “to disqualify.” If the Colossian believers allowed the false teachers to steer them away from Christ, they would lose the reward promised to those who persevere in following the truth. Note: This is not saying that the believer can lose his or her salvation. If a person is trusting in Christ alone to make him/her right with God, that person’s salvation is eternally secure. Jesus said in John 10:27-29: “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand.” We are talking here about loss of rewards in heaven.
