Elgin/New Leipzig Public School Head Custodian Doug Rivinius is proud of the upkeep on the school’s gym floor, a task that requires several sweepings a day.
Shining with pride 38 years of custodial work
Walk through the main doors of the Elgin/New Leipzig Public School, and you will surely notice those gleaming hallway floors, seemingly in defiance of the five-second rule.
“Oh…,” Doug Rivinius smiles broadly, shrugs. Yes, he replies, he’s proud of the school where he has been a custodian for the past 38 years.
He’s more than just the head custodian. He’s a chemist, meticulously monitoring the chlorine levels of the indoor pool; a mechanic, coddling a complex boiler system; and a friend to 38 years of graduating seniors.
Rivinius attended school here himself, then returned after a school board member suggested he apply for a custodial position. Rivinius had been training racehorses for a local doctor, who had moved away, leaving Rivinius without a job, so he applied for that custodial position.
