Meet the new owner of Star Grocery

Buying a small grocery store in a rural community might seem like a risky business proposition, but it’s that sort of challenge that interested Robert Allino, the new owner and manager of Star Grocery in New Leipzig. Robert, along with his adult children – son Josh and daughter Sara – have taken over operation of the store as of December 1. In addition to stocking and ringing up customers at Star Grocery, Josh and Sara also work across the street at Let’s Eat Cafe.

One of the first changes Robert made was to expand the store’s hours. It will be open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 3:00 p.m. He would also like to keep the store open a few hours on Christmas and New Year’s, so people can pick up those “lastminute” items that were forgotten.

Robert’s primary job is as a systems director in the field of information technology. He has previous management experience in several retail operations including a convenience store, a liquor store and a gas station that also sold groceries. “In one form or another, I’ve been in customer service pretty much my whole life,” said Robert.
