Love is in the air at The Green Stem
As Valentine’s Day approaches and Cupid aims his arrow on Sunday, Feb. 14, The Green Stem Floral & Gift Shop crew is knee-deep in flowers. Carnations. Daisies. And, of course, roses. Lots of roses.
“Valentine’s week is fun. Just the excitement of everybody. It’s so cute when you get a little kid coming in to buy flowers for their mom and they’re so proud picking out one stem of daisies. Flowers make people happy. It’s nice to be able to offer that,” says owner Kim Boehm.
Valentine’s Day plans at the shop in Elgin started in June when Boehm ordered vases, discovering COVID-19 was causing somewhat of a shortage. But most have arrived, “so I feel fortunate,” she says. “People have also been good about returning vases for us to recycle, which helps.”
Flowers were ordered in November from wholesalers in Minnesota, arriving a week before the holiday. Now, the flurry of activity begins, as Boehm hires four additional staff, along with her two regular employees and herself, to put arrangements together, help customers and deliver flowers throughout Grant County, Glen Ullin, Flasher and the Prairie Recovery Center.
