E/NL students experience "Into the Wild"

Wayne Westerberg of Madison, South Dakota, was a guest speaker in Mrs. Sharon Klein’s English 11 and 12 classes at Elgin-New Leipzig High School. The students had recently read the book Into the Wild from which Mr. Westerberg is a character.

The book Into the Wild, details the experience of Christopher Johnson McCandless who feels that one does not need to have all of life’s extra necessities to be successful and wants to prove this by living in nature with only what is necessary for survival. Wayne met Alex, as Chris eventually referred to himself while he is traveling, when he picked up Alex hitchhiking. Alex and Wayne became good friends and Alex worked for a time at Wayne’s grain elevator in Carthage, South Dakota. They kept in contact throughout Alex’s travels. Alaska is the place where Alex wants to prove he can live with nature and succeeds until he accidently eats a poison potato root and succumbs to starvation and dies.
