2019 Parade Marshals

The Elgin American Legion and Auxiliary are pleased to be selected as the Parade Marshals for the Elgin Celebration in 2019. We are celebrating the 100th birthday of the American Legion and Auxiliary this year.

The ElginAmerican Legion Post was chartered in 1933. Post #246 was named after George W. Snook Jr., a rural Elgin man who was the first area soldier to be killed in World War I. Members of the post are war-time Veterans who served during World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan and other conflicts throughout the world. The American Legion is a patriotic, mutual-help Veterans organization. The post supports men and women in uniform as well as children and youth programs, including the Legion Oratorical Program, Scouts, and the Boys State Program. Currently, there are 60 members in the Elgin Post.

The American Legion Auxiliary was formed to support the American Legion and its programs for Veterans, children and community. The Auxiliary has several adopted Veterans that are remembered on birthdays and holidays. The Auxiliary sends students to the Girls State Leadership Program, and International Music Camp Program at the International Peace Garden to further their musical abilities. Money is also given to various students for competition and educational programs. The Auxiliary supplies baked goods, fruit juices, and cookies for local blood drives. The Elgin American Legion Auxiliary Unit has 68 members.
